![]() Many people out there in the blogosphere are reporting more vivid dreams. You might even be experiencing more lucid dreams where you are aware that you are dreaming. They may also be full of color and movement, sometimes appearing surreal. They can be filled with lots of emotion and action. Intense and vivid dreams usually get your attention. The last REM stage before you awake may last as long as one hour. Your first REM stage only lasts about 10 minutes, but as the night goes on each REM session grows longer. So, in reality, you will have several sessions of REM or dream sleep. It goes NREM 1-4, REM and then repeats NREM 1-4, REM, etc. The sleep cycle actually repeats itself several times during those hours you spend in bed. “These intense dreams are designed to get your attention.” Once these four stages of NREM sleep are completed, then the REM period kicks in. Stages 3 and 4 are for deep sleep, with 4 being the deepest. ![]() Stage 1 is the initial phase where you start to drift off. The NREM portion of sleep is further divided into four stages.
